"Ghost Dance" Ron Garvais
Ron Garvais Bio/Artist Statement
“Discovered”
Born in Helena, Montana, Ron Garvais is Native American Indian from the Lakota (Sioux) tribe. Garvais is a leading contemporary Native American Indian Artist, influenced by all artists throughout history. Garvais studied Art, Art History and Native American Studies at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, earning a B.F.A. Studio Art and a B.G.S. Native American Studies. Garvais work can be found in myriad of public and private art collections, including galleries, museums and universities. Garvais has had numerous exhibitions nationwide. He currently lives in Spokane, Washington.
Garvais strives to make interesting paintings, aesthetically, technically, and conceptually. He incorporates Native American themes within his paintings through subject, title, style, or a combination thereof. Garvais refuses to romanticize the "Indian" as many Indian and Non-Indian artists and people do. His paintings are interpretive and educational as he expands perspectives of Indian people simultaneously providing positive Native American imagery for all to appreciate.
For his Art Opening titled “Discovered” he addresses the concept of “Discovery” regarding indigenous peoples of this continent. The idea that indigenous people was found is ridiculous yet still taught at every level of education. Every painting within this opening was “Discovered” by Garvais and altered completely or slightly based upon what he was trying to convey within the painting.
In closing, Ron Garvais strives to make interesting paintings: artistically, aesthetically, technically, and conceptually. Garvais work functions on these levels, not because he’s Native American Indian, but because he successfully conveys the mentioned aspects within his paintings.
In the Spirit of Crazy Horse,
Ronald Lance Garvais

Biography:
Ida started out as many young artists start out. As a child she spent countless hours in her room drawing and sketching to her hearts content. Over the years her skills developed and grew to where she began to tackle more complicated works. She began to study various text and styles of different artists like Monet, Da Vinci. She spent many hours at the library growing up checking out books on animals, and people. She spent countless hours studying the anatomy of people and animals and poured over countless books on various subjects. She had a love of art and had the basic skills and talent, but didn’t have the training needed to create a good composition. So she went to college at Spokane Falls Community College where she studied under Jim Hinton in his figure drawing class. She also took classes at the Falls in perspective drawing, calligraphy, and ceramics. These classes gave her a good basis to start developing her style and started her experimenting with different techniques. Various things sidetracked her art education, but it was never forgotten. She continued to work on her skills in her spare time outside of work and family. She has continued to create her art for various friends, and for her work. She has been the artist in residence for her employer and has volunteered her skills to create art for their library newsletters as well as published her artwork for the library magazine ALKI. Over the years the skills have grown and developed into what you see now. She continues to grow and develop as an artist. She hopes to continue to challenge and develop herself into an accomplished artist with help and advice from other artists and by continuing to work in different mediums. As far as her personal life she has been married to a wonderful man for over 30 years and they have bright and precocious a 10 year old son. They currently reside in Spokane.

Ildikó Kalapács was born in Hungary and has been living in the USA since 1987. She left Hungary just before the end of the Soviet occupation and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Her past experiences with social issues can be detected in her works created in the USA in the past 14 years.
Her work is rooted in two cultures (Hungarian and American) and influenced by her travels as a folk dancer and artist. Her two-dimensional images are derived from the traditions of figurative art mixed with traces of Central European folk art and the four languages she has been closely exposed to (Hungarian, Russian, English and Japanese). The complex nature of her art can be traced back to her interest in intercultural disciplines and globalization.
Her three-dimensional art works consist of mostly ceramic works with some mixed media and bronze pieces. The use of these materials has some tradition in Hungarian art but ceramics also plays a philosophically and conceptually important role in her art: Ceramic material symbolizes the fragile nature of the human body and soul. One must touch it and handle it gingerly and carefully. This is the basic principle and approach to her socially oriented sculptures. Along with the literal form, her work leaves enough room for abstract or conceptual interpretation.

John F. Thamm J.F. Thamm Gallery 11 S. Washington St. Spokane, WA 99201
John F. Thamm lives in Spokane, Washington. He holds portrait-workshops in many areas of the USA and in Europe. John F. Thamm's passions are portrait painting, landscapes and social realism. His book”Vets-Fifty Portraits of Veterans and their Stories” will be released May, 2010.
Born in Wendell Idaho, Thamm studied with Herman Keys and went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Idaho. He had a Ford Foundation Scholarship to the Art Student’s League in New York City and also studied in Los Angeles and Padua, Italy. Thamm has taught portrait workshops in the U.S., Mexico, the Netherlands and Germany, and owned art galleries on and off since 1964 in New York City’s Greenwich Village; Asbury Park, N.J.; Bisbee, Ariz.; Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Spokane.
John has been a courtroom sketch artist for television and newspaper media including CNN, ABC Asscoatied Press, KREM, KXLY and the Spokesman Review. Notable trials he has covered are: Weaver-Harris Ruby Ridge Trial, Branch Davidian-Waco Trial, Wenatchee Sex-ring Trial, and the Aryan Nations vs Southern Proverty Law Center. At the end of the Ruby Ridge trial he completed a large portrait of Gerry Spence that hangs in his personal collection in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. John's experiences at these trials led to his social realism show: Operation HUM/CON.
As artist in residence for the City of Spokane in the 1980’s, Thamm completed a 26- by 4-foot mural in the Council Chambers’ waiting briefing room depicting the history of Spokane and a portrait of James Glover. The previous year, he created an 83-foot long exterior mural in Hillyard, illustrating Spokane’s railroad history. His last mural project was a series of portraits of Peaceful Valley residents on the pillars of the Maple Street Bridge.
John’s most recent project is the completion of fifty portraits of veterans that will be released as a book this May titled; “Vets-Fifty Portraits of Veterans and their Stories.” The 50 veterans – colonels, captains, sergeants, infantrymen, and servicemen and women from every branch of the armed forces – come from “all the wars, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and Iraq.
A show of the paintings opened this summer at the Spokane Veterans Medical Hospital and was featured by the local PBS station-KSPS in the November Northwest Profiles series. The project can be viewed on the “Vets” project blogsite- http://johnthammstudios.blogspot.com/
